Sam Shave presents paper on the rural poor and the old poor laws

In September 2019, Sam Shave presented a paper at the biennial interdisciplinary European Rural History conference in Paris, ‘”Deaf to the voice of humanity”: Scandal and the suffering of the rural poor in the final decades of the old poor laws’. The paper was concerned with the development of welfare scandals in local welfare systems prior to the greater government centralisation and control introduced in the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834.
